Diane Smith

'I recognize Yoga as an unbroken, essential, string of wisdom teachings that guide us to live as our authentic Self, illuminated and guided by light.  These teachings have at times become unstrung, spilling onto the ground, gathered up and restrung, confirming to me the strength and divinity of Yoga philosophy and practice as a profound guidance to evolving through life'.

I'm a Yogi, artist, home builder, creator, and sustainer. I am a mother and grandmother and have been blazing my trail on the Yoga path at the feet of esteemed teachers for 30 years plus. I began my study and humble practice in the 80's through the teachings of Swami Radha, our Divine pioneer and developer of Kundalini Yoga in the West.  My Yoga education began soon after with dipping my toes in Inyegar's Yoga tradition and truly became rooted with Gay Meagley and Angela Farmer, followed by a long standing devotion to Sama Fabian (AUROLAB) and other feminist breakaway Iyengar teachers in the Vijnana form. Since 1995 I've been teaching Hatha, Yin, and Restorative Yoga, Childbearing Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, and Yoga Nidra.

My Yoga education is a summation of life experiences, divine teachers along the way, and certifications in Kripalu Yoga, Yoga Therapy, Kundalini Yoga and Yoga for Trauma.  Everything has led me to integrating Yoga into the healing of trauma and addiction and a new vista has opened up in order to provide the profound medicine of Yoga and Somatic approaches to recovery.  I am currently undergoing the three year training in Somatic Experiencing and the work of Peter Levine, while studying and practicing Somatics (movement therapy).  I have developed a synthesis of Yoga Asana and Somatics which I call 'SOMASANA’.  It offers a way to release postural tensions and body pain, while learning to connect with yourself and your Soma (the body) to keep this ongoing process alive in your daily life. My authentic journey is never ending as I allow it to lead me in the eternal quest for healing and awakening to collective consciousness.

My work and careers have steadily evolved.  I practiced as a professional midwife in the 90's, with a near decade in India teaching and assisting women in childbirth.  Returning to Canada in 2013 I developed a livelihood in art on Hornby Island.  Since 2012, I've put form to the vision of SUN DOOR YOGA, which is a testament to my dedication to Yoga and the creation of environments that fully support it.

'I have just completed a ten day Yoga retreat in Katmandu Nepal with Diane. Throughout the course which was tapered to suit all levels of Yoga experience, we focused on Meditation, the Breath, and vital Yoga. Diane as a teacher is unsurpassed. I have been practicing Yoga for many years and her ability to treat each member of our group as valued and loved is delightful. We are all different and our bodies and minds show this; her encouragement and depth of knowledge made the sessions comfortable, relaxed, informative and  enjoyable! Her intrinsic wisdom and love of this ancient practice lifted us all to receiving much needed replenishment of body and soul.'

'Diane Smith is an exceptional and holistic Yoga teacher/instructor. She has a unique way of combining Yoga asana with physiological explanations that no other teacher has yet demonstrated. She teaches Hatha Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, meditative and restorative practices that result in a transformation to the practitioner in physical, mental and spiritual levels. All of these are delivered in a soft and encouraging manner, and I recommend Diane to lead you into experiencing these results.'
